2018年联合国糖尿病日的主题为：家庭与糖尿病（The Family and Diabetes）。联合国糖尿病日前身是世界糖尿病日（World Diabetes Day，WDD），由世界卫生组织和国际糖尿病联盟于1991年共同发起的，其宗旨是引起全球对糖尿病的警觉和醒悟。

BMC精选旗下相关期刊和研究前沿论文，旨在帮助各位专家学者了解最新发表的研究，希望各界共同参与到糖尿病的防治工作中来。

糖尿病是一种常见病、多发病，世卫组织估计全世界2.2亿多人患有糖尿病。如不进行干预，这一数字到2030年可能会增加一倍以上。近80%的糖尿病死亡发生在中低收入国家。

我国目前约有5千万糖尿病人，而且有上升的趋势，严重威胁到人类的健康。世界卫生组织已将糖尿病列为三大疑难病之一，在全球几乎每一个国家，糖尿病发病率都在上升。这种疾病是导致失明、肾衰竭、截肢、心脏病和中风的主要原因。

近年来，全球2型糖尿病患者数量显著增加，且发病显著年轻化。可能原因包括肥胖人数增加、生活方式不健康（缺乏体育锻炼、饮食不健康等）、高收入国家平均寿命延长等。1型糖尿病发病率也呈现增加趋势，具体原因尚不明确。

与应对逐年增高的发病率相平行的是糖尿病相关科学研究和治疗方法不断取得新突破，例如调整饮食和生活方式、减肥手术、新型药物试验（胰岛素类似物、GLP-1激动剂、SGLT2抑制剂等）、干细胞相关方法、人工胰腺、智能技术等。

我们鼓励科研人员积极向BMC Medicine糖尿病特辑投稿，实验研究（包括系统回顾和荟萃分析）可以就糖尿病发病机制、遗传风险、种族背景、危险因素、复杂患者（包括老年人、年轻人和儿童）的控制、药物治疗、临床试验新数据等任何一方面展开探索。此外糖尿病特辑中BMC Medicine还会发表邀约综述、辩论和文章评论。

近期的临床流行病学研究发现具有进食障碍的患者中糖尿病患病比例较高，罹患糖尿病的的进食障碍患者死亡率较高，这一发现意味着血糖控制不佳可能是导致患者死亡的重要原因。
