Fulfilling socio-cultural needs is crucial for residents satisfaction, quality of life, and sustainable development. The relationship between socio-cultural dynamics and housing preferences and forms has long been central to architectural and environment-behaviour research. However, a holistic understanding of the socio-cultural and spatial factors associated with housing remains limited. This systematic scoping review synthesised knowledge from 141 peerreviewed articles across 40 countries to identify these key factors and their interconnections. The review identified nine socio-cultural and six spatial factor groups, each including multiple sub-factors. These factors were then incorporated into a conceptual model that illustrates their interrelationships and collective influence on housing design. The findings confirmed the complex relationship between culture and housing, encompassing a wide range of factors. By applying the Shannon entropy weighting method, regional mapping, and similarity analysis, the review assessed the variability of these factors across various countries to guide designers and policymakers. Notably, "values, norms, standards, and expectations" among sociocultural factors and "spatial arrangements" among spatial factors showed broader applicability across various countries in the culture-housing relationship. The review concluded by highlighting important avenues for future research and advocating for a holistic, balanced approach to understanding the evolving interplay between culture and housing in research and practice.

满足社会文化需求对于居民满意度、生活质量与可持续发展至关重要。社会文化动态与居住偏好、居住形态之间的关系，长期以来都是建筑学与环境行为学研究的核心议题。然而，学界对与居住相关的社会文化及空间因素仍缺乏整体性理解。本系统性范围综述整合了来自 40 个国家的 141 篇同行评审文献，旨在识别上述关键因素及其相互关联。综述共提炼出 9 类社会文化因素与 6 类空间因素，每类均包含多项子因素。在此基础上，研究构建了概念模型，用以阐释各因素间的相互关系及其对居住设计的综合影响。研究结果证实了文化与居住之间复杂的关联，其涉及维度广泛。本研究采用香农熵权法、区域制图与相似性分析，评估了上述因素在不同国家间的差异程度，为设计者与政策制定者提供依据。研究发现，在文化 — 居住关系中，社会文化因素里的“价值观、规范、标准与期望”，以及空间因素里的“空间布局”，在各国均表现出更强的普适性。最后，本文指出了未来重要的研究方向，并主张在研究与实践中采用整体、均衡的视角，理解文化与居住之间不断演变的互动关系。

With a focus on place making and the perception and visualization of the built environment, he has been providing public sector based urban design research for over fifteen years. He holds qualifications at both Masters and Doctorate levels from the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning at University of California, Los Angeles, and the Martin Centre for Land Use and Built Form Studies at Cambridge University. John has been successfully running the Urbanheart Surgery urban design studio since 1999 which helps to generate discourse on contemporary urban issues between governments, communities, the design professions and higher education. This program has facilitated over fourteen planning and design forums with nine municipalities in regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne.

Sarah McGann

Professor / Head of School

Professor Sarah McGann is an architectural researcher and the Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle. Sarahs research builds upon her research and practice background particularly within the "social life of buildings." She has a special interest and expertise in design for wellbeing, ageing and palliative care. Maintaining her registration as an architect in Ireland, Sarah continues to consult with a range of architectural practices, and health and aged-care providers on built environment matters. Sarahs funded work includes investigating the impact design and spatial practices have upon building occupants. She is currently the principal investigator in an interdisciplinary project that examines the design of aged-care facilities and their impact on quality of life indicators.
