Special Issue: Microplastics in agroecosystems
Background, Objectives and Scope
Plastic pollution has been recently listed as one of the top 10 global environmental problems by the United Nations Environment Programme and is now considered to be a major factor responsible for the worldwide decline in biodiversity. However, plastics are continuously being consumed every year. Particularly, agriculture currently consumes 8 million tons of plastic per year globally with a predicted annual growth rate of 6.8% over the next 5 years. Plastics less than 5 mm are defined as microplastics and have received increasing attention in terms of their potential impact on ecosystems. Microplastics can be transported great distances across the globe because of their durability, light weight, and buoyancy. Although several thousand articles have been published on the amount, behaviour and fate of microplastics in marine systems, our understanding of the impact of microplastics on ecological functioning and the human food chain in terrestrial environments, remains poorly understood. This is surprising considering that 80% of microplastics arriving in the oceans were produced, used, and often disposed of on land. Agriculture provides most food for human, despite, the potential ecological and humanitarian trade-offs of microplastic use in agricultural systems remains poorly understood.
This research topic will help to reveal the nature of the microplastic problem by combining disciplines of physicochemistry, biochemistry, and ecology.
Contributions can include, but are not limited to:
● The transform and transport of microplastics in soil
● The impact of microplastics on soil biota
● The effect of microplastics on soil element cycling
● Biofilm formation on microplastics and its ecological effect
Submission Procedure
All submissions have to be prepared according to the Guide for Authors as published in the Journal website at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/selett. Authors should clearly indicate their manuscript is intended for the special issue Microplastics in agroecosystem when submitting their manuscript online. All contributions must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Articles, once accepted will be published online ahead of print, assigned with an unique DOI.
