Neuroengineering: Frontiers and Challenges

Abstract

To ‘study brain’ we may benefit from technologies that can probe (record, interface, image, …) brain. I will focus on a selected few frontiers. Take a cue from Physicists’ study of universe, we need amazing technologies from atomic scale to galaxy and whole known universe scale. So, study of brain needs technologies that probe neurons at sub-cellular and cellular level and technologies that address or interface to the whole brain, its 80 billion neurons and their extensive networks. So, the first frontier of neurotechnology is probes for the nervous system. I will present frontiers and challenges of neural interfaces. Still, how do these neurons, regions of brain come together for a whole, how do you probe the function? That brings us to the second frontier of imaging the brain and studying brain’s ‘message’: neuronal and brain rhythms to study and encode neural activity and translate into rhythms that signal health, mental activity and even consciousness/death. I will present examples of brain rhythm analysis and how they can be deployed for basic research and clinical translation. So, if we can interface to brain and study brain’s message and clinical applications of monitoring brain in situations of life and death. Finally, I will end this talk with the emerging, popular and paradigm shifting field of brain machine interface. In one application of brain machine interface, from fundamental challenges of encoding of neuronal populations for application to neuroprosthesis. In another application of brain machine interface, there is need for noninvasive technologies, electrical, magnetic, optical or ultrasound. I will conclude with the challenge or ‘closing the loop’ to sense and control brain function in health and disease, BMI with sensory input, closed loop treatment of diseases such as epilepsy and Parkinson’s.

为了研究大脑,我们会使用各种技术(电记录,神经界面,成像等)对其探测,我主要专注于几种特定的前沿方向。以探索宇宙的方式为示例,物理学家们使用的惊人技术从原子尺度到银河系尺度再到整个已知宇宙尺度。而在研究大脑方面,也需要对神经细胞从亚细胞尺度到细胞尺度再到全脑尺度来进行探测,以此来理解脑内八百亿个神经元及其拓展出的网络。因此,神经工程的第一个前沿方向是神经界面,我将介绍当前神经界面的前沿与挑战。同时我们也需要了解众多神经元及不同脑区如何协同成为一个整体,我们应该如何探测它们。这将我们带到了研究大脑成像和大脑“信息”的第二个前沿领域:研究神经元和大脑的节律,这种节律如何编码神经活动,我们如何将这种节律与健康、心理活动、意识/死亡相解读。我将展示脑节律分析的例子,以及如何将它们翻译应用于基础研究和临床中。最后,我会以脑机接口这个当下新兴流行的范式转换领域来结束本次演讲。在脑机接口的其中一个应用中,基础挑战在于从编码神经元群到神经假体的应用。在脑机接口的另一个应用中,需要一系列诸如电、磁、光或超声波等的无创技术。我将以“闭环”脑机接口面临的挑战结束本次演讲,通过“闭环”来感知和调控大脑,一方面是具有感官输入的脑机接口,另一方面是癫痫和帕金森病等疾病的闭环治疗。

Biography

Nitish V. Thakor is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering and at Johns Hopkins University since 1983. He also joined the National University of Singapore in 2012 and served as the Founding Director of Singapore Institute for Neurotechnology (SINAPSE). Prof. Thakor’s technical expertise is in the fields of Medical Instrumentation and Neuroengineering, where he has carried out research on many technologies for brain monitoring, implantable neurotechnologies, neuroprosthesis and brain-machine interface. He has published over 420 refereed journal papers (GH Index 85), obtained 16 US and international patents and co-founded 3 active companies. He was previously the Editor in Chief of IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering, and currently the EIC of Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing (Springer/Nature). He is the Editor of an upcoming authoritative reference Handbook of Neuroengineering. Prof. Thakor is a recipient of the Technical Achievement Award (Neuroengineering) as well as the Academic Career Award from the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. He received a Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health and a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation, and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, Life Fellow of IEEE, Biomedical Engineering Society, and International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering. He is a recipient of a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India, and a Centennial Medal from the University of Wisconsin School of Engineering. In 2021 he was elected to the US National Academy of Inventors.
